Wish You Were Here

Updated: Oct 7, 2022

There is something so uplifting watching Sophia Loren in a romantic comedy film. Audrey and Grace seem to get all the attention but Sophia is so charismatic. In recent times of uncertainty, restricted travel and lockdowns, a little joy is much appreciated and I certainly find joy in watching Sophia.

Earlier this year, yearning for summer travel to some fantastic Mediterranean setting, I settled instead on watching a film that was set there (complete with vintage summer fashion of course). The film, It Started in Naples (1960) with Sophia Loren and Clark Gable is one I always meant to watch but for some reason had escaped me until now.

What's not to love about this film? It has great fashion and the beautiful Italian backdrop of Capri. I realised however, it was the first film I have seen Sophia Loren in, which made me think; how is that possible? Sophia is of course absolutely stunning to watch on screen and just as entertaining - it's impossible not to be completely mesmerised by her. But from the minute Clarke Gable arrives into Naples train station, a parade of summer dresses and fashion passes by on the platform; an assortment of printed cotton fabrics, head scarves and straw bags would satisfy any vintage fashion lover.

I have to admit the cool Italian backdrop is also so enchanting that I've watched the film over, dreaming of all the summer outfits and straw bag moments I, myself have yet to come...

Construct the Look:

#1 - It Started in Naples (1960), Sophia Loren.

A place like Capri calls for fabulous fashion pieces like this Caravana open-back jumpsuit, £328, Net-A-Porter. A wide brim hat from Free People, £58, not only gives glamorous vibes it's also ideal for hiding delicate skin from the sun.

Platforms from Reformation, £248, would look great with this jumpsuit, easily taking you from day to night and Staud's micro raffia top handle bag, £131, is a fun way to incorporate this summer staple.
