Petal Perfection: Embracing the New Flower Power in Fashion

Updated: Apr 14

There are some things you can always count on when it comes to fashion - like a French woman's chic uniform (blazer, jeans and flats, in case you didn't already know), sequins for Christmas and florals for spring. The other thing you can always count on? Trends, and the speed at which fashion changes its fickle mind.

And this season reminds us of that. Sequins stretch beyond the holidays and spill into spring and flowers get taken up a notch or two - or three-dimensional, to be exact. Building

a wardrobe around staples - timeless pieces that never go out of style - is smart, like the French woman's chic uniform. Dabbling in a new trend becomes a great way to update any look instantly.

Spring 2023 was all about oversized floral embellishments - the bigger the better. And it was a big (no pun intended) trend in menswear too. Take Harry Styles' look at the Brit Awards last year, his over-sized flower neck corsage is exactly what I'm talking about. And what about Eddie Redmayne's gorgeous brown satin Valentino suit with matching flower? Unlike Styles' loud floral statement, Redmayne's is, yes, a statement, but by comparison his is quietly stylish yet striking.

Fast forward to the 2024 Golden Globes and Tyler James Williams wears a stripe suit with floral corsage to match from Dolce & Gabanna, proving floral embellishments are what's been missing from menswear all this time.

Flowers, rosettes, corsages, whatever you want to call them, are, of course, not new to fashion. In fact they've been in and out of fashion for hundreds of years, adorning everything from clothes, shoes and jewellery to hats. Flower embellishments were a style staple and made trendy by TV fashion icon Carrie Bradshaw on Sex and the City (1998-2004). As the saying goes; there are no new ideas - so perhaps this floral trend isn't exactly new - lets's call it a revival then.

If you look at the recent fashion shows; from S/S 24 to F/W 24, one after another, beautiful pieces embellished with florals emerge. Designers such as Amiri, Emporio Armani, Valentino, and Antonio Marras have reimagined the motif in menswear for 2024. Over in womenswear designers Balmain, Phillip Lim, Aknvas, Alessandra Rich and Chloé also constructed stunning pieces with 3D florals. The recent awards season with the constant show of celebrity outfits has by now brought the trend to everyone's immediate attention - and captured our imagination.

It's easy to get in on the trend now too, as most retailers have a floral embellishment of some description. Be brave and go large, or smaller if you prefer a simple nod to the trend. Whichever you choose, be confident incorporating it into your outfits - it's super chic and will make you look fashion forward!
