Hello Autumn: The Joy of a Sweater Dress

Finally, as the long summer evenings give way to a new season, I can't help but jump for joy inside. (It seems my urgency to usher in autumn in September is not shared by those still clinging to the last days of summer). My excitement for the new season - which for me actually begins in August - is purely driven by fashion, as I longingly anticipate the September issue of various magazines. This usually hits a peak during the last few days of the month and probably stems from a long-standing love of back-to-school shopping that has never gone away.

So when during the last week of September I spotted pumpkins, squash and gourds on display outside my local grocers, I gave a slight nod in their direction. I knew in that moment that come Saturday - the first day of October - I would declare using my wardrobe that autumn is officially here! And I had the perfect outfit in mind to kick it all off – a maxi sweater dress.

Yes, my cream-coloured, wool blend Cos dress from last A/W would make its way back onto the sidewalk catwalk again as I ventured out. A sweater dress is an easy and stylish way to dress for the cooler autumn weather without much effort - it’s practically a throw-on-and-go piece and therefore an essential part of your A/W wardrobe.

Town & Country: Here’s how I style a sweater dress;

A maxi sweater dress like this one from Hush is an easy and cozy do-it-all

one-piece that will see you out the door when you head for the hills. Outdoor adventures call for a pair of stylish yet practical rubber boots and they don’t come more stylish (and versatile) than the Chloé Betty boot. As the day turns to errands and lunch in town, a quick change to knee-high boots is the perfect match - these boots from Mango are ideal. Try wrapping a long skinny belt around your waist to look like two belts, like this one from Mint Velvet. Then add a black leather tote from & Other Stories and your look is almost complete. A relaxed full length wool coat is a luxury piece to sling on for when the temperatures drop - & Other Stories has a good one to try in Navy. Of course a CND Shellac manicure in Oxblood is the perfect shade to welcome in new season dressing. - KL Stylist
