A Spring & Summer Wardrobe Staple: The Timeless Appeal of a LWD

Updated: Jun 1

When I saw Anya Taylor-Joy step out at this year's Cannes Film Festival wearing a sheer white strapless dress adorned with flower appliques, I couldn't help but think of the timeless appeal of a LWD and the many iconic ones featured in films we know and love.

Who could forget the white dress Marilyn Monroe wore in the film, The Seven-Year Itch? Or Elizabeth Taylor's white lace slip in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. There's also Sharon Stone's white dress in that Basic Instinct scene. Oh, and don't forget the Calvin Klein one Alicia Silverstone wore in Clueless.

Yes, it would appear a LWD is just as classic as a LBD when it comes to the silver screen. In fashion, both Gucci and Chanel favoured white dresses as part of their Resort 2025 collections. Gucci's dresses were intricate in sheer, delicate fabrics with beautiful embellishments. Whereas Chanel took a more classic and romantic approach with white broderie anglaise dresses - perfect for a seaside holiday. And I loved Sienna Miller's Chloé boho white lace dress at the recent Met Gala - perfection.

With spring (fingers crossed) finally here, I'm reaching for my own white dress purchased from COS last year; designed with cutouts at the waist and with a tie belt, I love that it's a modern take on a classic shirt dress. This spring, why not make a white dress your wardrobe essential. Its timeless appeal and effortless elegance make it the perfect choice for embracing this season. Whether you're attending a special event or a simple day out, a LWD is definitely a stylish statement piece worth investing in. Need a starting point? See below for some I've come across lately - there's something for everyone.

The full skirt is very Marilyn-esq. Simple, beautiful and it has

pockets! Wear with a chic cardigan tied nonchalantly at the

front to keep the romantic vibe or add a cropped biker jacket

for more of an edge. Balia Linen Dress, Reformation. £298.

Love a 90s slip dress? This one from Urban Outfitters is your

answer. It's also giving Elizabeth Taylor's lace slip vibes. £59.

Feeling inspired by the Gucci Cruise 2025 collection? This

Victoria Beckham x Mango dress is giving all that. £115.

The addition of the corset-like belt gives this classic shirt

dress from Alaïa  a modern update ; a soft yet sculptural

design. £1920. *(Style note: I found strikingly very similar

shoes at Next).

If you buy one dress this season make it a drop waist - it's the

style of S/S24. Free People £78. -KL Stylist

Chefs kiss write up on the LWD. I would play Cher Horowitz in drama class and got a similar replicate at Le Chateau circa '97. As iconic as the LBD, from Romantic to Boho to just plain fun, I love the LWD! These examples are great, thanks!
