Shimmer & Shine: Styling A Paco Rabanne Sequin Mini Skirt

Updated: Feb 24

Set in the South of France, Two for the Road has to be my favourite Audrey Hepburn movie. From her many, many outfit changes to the old style airport terminal and glamorous air travel (complete with vintage car being loaded into an airplane!), to Audrey’s Louis Vuitton handbag - it is just gorgeous! It oozes so much '60s fashion and glamour, it’s hard not to indulge over and over.

With the rise in popularity of waif-like fashion models in the 1960s like Jean Shrimpton and Twiggy, Audrey takes on a fashion model role within the film. With every scene comes a new fashionable backdrop; each action and pose is like seeing her on a catwalk. The big screen provides an ideal space to showcase how different fashion designs look and move on the body.

During this era, designers like Paco Rabanne, Pierre Cardin, Yves Saint Laurent and Emilio Pucci were excited by new materials like vinyl, plastic, rhodoïd, metal and silver fabrics. They experimented to create striking, bold and futuristic high-fashion designs for the jet-set consumer.

Fashions like these are used in the film to help Audrey appeal to a younger audience and to demonstrate the change in the fashionability of her character Joanna, as her husband becomes a successful architect. The party scene at the end of the film sees Audrey dancing and wearing a Paco Rabanne mini dress in iridescent plastic discs and metal jump rings. Audrey being the fashion model allows for this ultimate display of bold, futuristic fashion design - the epitome of '60s fashion.

See below how I would construct the look around that iconic Paco Rabanne piece.

Paco Rabanne Sequinned mini skirt, £1,490 Net-A-Porter. This beautiful skirt is so versatile that it can be dressed up or down and worn summer and winter. Wear it now with a cool logo T-shirt gathered and tied to one side. And come Autumn/Winter try it with chunky boots and a super soft pink cashmere roll neck like this one from & Other Stories. Here I've selected: Frill collar blouse, £65,

& Other Stories. Black ankle Boots, £35.99, Mango and Jacquard Knitted Wool Vest, £69, Arket
