All About the Fringe

Updated: May 23

In the '80s and '90s, fashion designer Jean Charles de Castelbajac created many versions of the fringe blanket coat in jewel-like raspberry and purple hues - the rich colour palette the designer is known for working with.

I first became aware of fringe as a fashionable embellishment in the early '90s; I remember my older, teenage sister being obsessed with a white leather fringe jacket - she had set her sights on it and put all her savings towards it. I loved how the fringe hung from each arm and across the back. When she wore it she became the envy of all her friends - worth every penny, as she put it. I thought it was the coolest and she looked cool in it.

Now I have a fringe coat of my own; a wool, camel-coloured coat from Whistles. Since the day I laid eyes on it, I too was determined to have it - elegant, chic, timeless - a wise investment - a statement piece to take out and wear time and again; dress it up or down. It's perfect - worth every penny! As a stylist, I suggest to look out for a wool coat in a lighter weight, it will make a great transitional piece that you can carry on wearing into spring. In my opinion no outfit is complete without having the right coat - so essential it immediately gives a polished, tied-together look. The right coat will see you through many occasions and easily take you from AM to PM.

Although fringe emerged on the fashion scene back in 2022, so far, this year and heading into spring, it only seems to be growing in popularity; with everything from jackets, coats, sweaters and bags adorned with it. So if you want to get in on the trend and want an alternative to a fringe jacket or coat, I've included a few other pieces in my must-have list so you can still get in on the action. See below for fringe-worthy items to invest in now. - KL Stylist.

Fringed suede jacket, Jigsaw £450. This jacket comes

in beige too, although this dreamy shade of blue is

what I'm loving right now. Wear with wide leg jeans

and heeled ankle boots. Gorgeous.

This beautiful piece would look equally as good with

a pair of high waisted jeans as it would with black

flared trousers. Tip: this also works great as a bolero

thrown over a solid colour column or shift dress. And

don't forget to flip it 'round - it can be worn either way!

Fringed leather M bag, Maje £329. A statement piece

for winter or spring/summer that will definitely go the

distance. Wear it cross body during the day and as a

clutch for evening. You won't be sorry.

Fringed jacket, Toteme £720. You can't have a piece

about fringe and not mention Toteme! A statement

piece. Très chic for sure.

Belted fringe cardigan, Alanui £2,495. Throw over a

simple white t-shirt and jeans for a stylish, effortless

look. An investment piece but one you will cherish

forever. Very 'Emily in Paris' Chic.

This jacket will go with everything from jeans

to trousers, leggings, midi and maxi dresses.

Wear with trainers or lace up chunky boots for

a casual vibe. Love it.
